Weihnachtsmarkt!

On Saturday (despite the -15 degrees Celsius weather!) we visited the Stuttgart Weihnachtsmarkt or Christmas Market. It was so festive and fun! The market was HUGE. It went on for blocks and blocks. Weinachtsmarkts have food/drink vendors, gift vendors, small rides, and TONS of people. There was also a small skating rink. Here's a view of a small portion of the market:

Our first stop after we got acquainted with our surroundings was for some YUMMY Glühwein! Glühwein is german mulled wine and it hits the spot in chilly weather.

The Glühwein got our bellies grumbling so we scoped out some choices. There were...

...breads and baguettes. We split a baguette and of course...

...a brat! I can honestly say it was THE best brat I've ever had. After walking around for about an hour we could hardly feel our fingers and toes so we figured it was time to make our way back to the car.

We read (in Bon Appetit, thanks T & E!) that there is a Medieval Weihnachtsmarkt in Esslingen, which is a town just west of us. We're going to check it out tomorrow!

We hope everyone is having a great Christmas season so far!

You're so right, E! Gluhwein (and all of the warm drinks) are sold in real ceramic mugs. They hold a 1 euro deposit, so if you'd like to keep the mug you're good to go. If you'd rather not keep the mug you simply return the mug to the vendor and they give you your 1 euro back. We kept one of our mugs! ;)

looks fun but really chilly! Do you feel like you are already learning German?

Slowly but surely we're picking up more and more German. I can count to 10, know a bunch of colors, and can say a handful of phrases. Brian knows a bit more than I do. I need to start hitting the books! ;)
