True Life: Cooking in our room

When we first knew we'd be living in the Marriott one of our immediate questions was, "How are we going to cook?!" We LOVE to cook for ourselves and so we knew we'd find a way. Find a way, we have! Here's a little tour of our humble kitchen and an explanation of how we cook in our cozy home.

Without further ado, please meet our darling (compact) kitchen:

"She's short and skinny, but she's STRONG." (I know some of you can name that movie...)

Now let's break it down. Here is the very bottom shelf:

One shelf up holds our "stove":

Directly above that shelf is our well-packed refrigerator. Again, she's small, but mighty!

Last, but certainly not least, is our pantry.

We've definitely gotten better and better at cooking (and storing food) in a small space. We generally go to the commissary (grocery store for the non-military) about 3-4 times per week. That might sound like a lot, but the commissary is conveniently close and by going more often we're able to eat more fresh vegetables and meats versus packaged foods.

Another added benefit is that the PCS Lounge has a microwave that we can use. Since we like to eat a lot of rice as a side, this has been an immense perk for us. Meet our new favorite microwavable friend:

Here's a peek at some of the yummy meals we've made in our little kitchen:

Chicken Tikka Masala, hearty salads, and fajitas!

Planning meals in our new kitchen takes a little more creativity, but we're just grateful we're able to cook for ourselves. Bon appetit!

wow, that's amazing, actually! i guess we can all get along with a lot less space. eating fresh is always a good idea: if you're able to do it, go for it--
bon appetite!

I'm impressed. I thought I had it bad as far as counter and storage space goes! I won't complain anymore. Oh and I don't know if you can get the Cholua on base, but if you can't, I will send you a hot sauce care package when you run out. You can deal without some things, but no one should have to live without hot sauce.

Ha, thanks, Hallie! Brian actually bought multiple bottles for that exact reason. I'll definitely letcha know though if we run out and can't find any on base. :)
