Kunstmuseum

Since we stayed in town this weekend we wanted to get to see more of our city. Sunday provided the perfect day for heading downtown to explore the Kunstmuseum (Art Museum). We hopped on a train in Vaihingen and basked in the warm glow from the sunshine:

A few stops later we hopped off the train at Stadtmitte (City Center) and walked along Konigstrasse:

The weather was beautiful, albeit a touch windy. We walked down Konigstrasse (which is the main pedestrian-only street in Stuttgart) and checked to see if the sushi restaurant we wanted to go to after the Museum was open...it was! We then proceeded to the Kunstmuseum:

The Kunstmuseum is an enormous glass cube. It is such a cool building! I love the way the blue sky reflects of the exterior. The interior proved to be just as lovely as well. The Museum is medium sized with a large collection of German Expressionists as well as Modern and Contemporary Art. An interesting traveling exhibition was of Gerda Taro's photography. Her images are very raw and so numerous that it creates a very real portrayal of the Spanish Civil War. The other exhibition we really enjoyed was of Elger Esser's photography. His large scale photos have a soft dreamlike sensibility and evoke a strong sense of nostalgia. Due to his printing process, some of his work even took on a painterly quality. It was so fun to see some interesting photography! After we saw all 4 levels at the Museum, we took a little rest on a bench right outside of the Musuem:

It felt SO good to sit outside in the sunshine and enjoy Stuttgart. Once we soaked up a little Vitamin D we walked over to the sushi place for a yummy lunch before catching our train home. It was so nice to not travel and actually explore our own city. We can't wait for more daytrips to Stuttgart!
